Everything gives up gracefully.

The elm releases without bitterness.

The last tomato on the vine

doesn't argue about it.

They practiced this all summer:

growing toward and letting go,

toward and letting go,

the whole season just rehearsal

for this.

I watch from the window

and take notes.
