The Commuter's Lament

Pressed between a briefcase

and a stranger's elbow,

I have memorized the ceiling

of every train I've known.

The cities blur to smudges,

the stations pass like sighs,

but in this swaying carriage

I find my rarest prize:

a poem in my pocket,

a breath between the stops,

a small and perfect moment

before the platform drops.
